Al Haj Abdul Majeed (First Muslim MP of Polonnaruwa District) passed away in Sri Lanka on 18th June, 2021. He is the beloved Father of Abdul Imtiaz Majeed (Scarborough) and Ameen Majeed (Pickering).

"O ALLAH forgive our living and our dead, those who are with us and those who are absent, our young and our old, our menfolk and our womenfolk. O ALLAH, whomever you give life from among us give him life in Islam, and whomever you take way from us take him away in Faith. O ALLAH, do not forbid us their reward and do not send us astray after them."
Asma Ameen's Rise will Lift Others!
Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, the longest-serving first lady of United States once said that a woman is like a tea bag - you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water and that was the quote I remembered when I read that Asma secured the first place in the elementary school category of the annual Speaker's Idol competition hosted by Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies.

Simon Wiesenthal (31 December 1908 – 20 September 2005) was a Jewish Austrian Holocaust survivor, Nazi hunter, and writer. This year, students based their speeches on the Simon Wiesenthal quote, “The history of humankind is the history of crimes and history can repeat. So information is a defence. Through this we can build, we must build, a defence against repetition.” When we look at the plight of the Palestinians today, we realize the accuracy of this statement.

“Why has it become a societal norm to prepare our children for a cruel world instead of teaching them how to change it?” Asma Ameen said in her speech. “Let's ensure that the future generations don't make mistakes of the past. It is time for us to rise up and break the cycle of violence. Let's stop waiting for a fictional hero to come save us. Let's be our own heroes.”

What a profound statement from a 12 years old! Most of the parents constantly underestimate their kids because of their heavy involvement with the social media but Asma's winning sheds a ray of hope that if these kids could be directed to use the social media for the betterment of the society then the whole world will benefit from it.

Backgrounds and countries may change but the dilemmas faced by the Muslims all over the world are the same. As Asma articulated well, it's time that we end our quest for a fictional hero or outside help to come and save us and let's be our own heroes. I've read that in a room where people unanimously maintain a conspiracy of silence, one word of truth sounds like a pistol shot and Asma's words resonate akin to a cannon shot.

CSMA congratulates Asma Ameen for her marvellous achievement and hopes that her successful trailblazing action will inspire the youth of our community to rise up too to play vibrant role in the constructive evolution of building social cohesion, economic prosperity and political stability.
